2G
GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications)
Our network is GSM standard based. GSM is a 2G international standard for digital mobile communications. It is applied in practically all the countries of the world and is adjusted to the voice transmission. Our 2G network corresponds to all world mobile telephony standards. You can see here data transfer rates in 2G network. At this moment, Telenor GSM network covers almost 90% of the territory and 95% of population in Serbia. See coverage map.
EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution)
EDGE represents advanced 2G network. It provides much greater throughput band and quicker transmission of data and larger capacities for mobile users. This service has been in commercial use since November 2004. At the end of renovation, the whole 2G network will support EDGE technology. See coverage map.
Maximum theoretic data transfer speed is over three times higher compared to GPRS and reaches 384 kbps on downlink and 88 kbps on uplink. Real throughputs of some 100 kbps on downlink and cca. 40 Mbps on uplink provide basic Internet services, web browsing, e-mail and use of new applications.
3G
UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System)
UMTS is the official European standard for the implementation of 3G mobile telecommunications technologies. With GSM it is the widest spread system of public mobile telephony on the planet. Apart from voice and message transmission, this technology makes it possible to establish video calls and quick data transfers (broadband) with WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) access technology. See here data transfer speeds in 3G network.
UMTS network was commercially launched on March 1, 2007, and at this moment covers over 65% of the population. See coverage map.
HSPA+ (Evolved HSPA)
HSPA+ technology currently supporting the largest customer throughputs in Telenor network, is frequently also called 3G+ technology. It provides the best experience with mobile Internet, and at the end of renovation it will be available in all larger towns in Serbia. See coverage map.
Maximum theoretic data transfer speed is 21 Mbps on downlink and 5.76 Mbps on uplink. Real user throughputs range approximately from around 4 to 9 Mbps, and under better conditions go over 10 Mbps on downlink and around 1.5 – 2 Mbps on uplink. More information on the new network quality.
HSPA+ technologies within new, Telenor Smart network have been in commercial use as of May 2011.
